Aftercare

What you’ll need:

  • Unscented soap (e.g. Dr. Bronner’s)

  • Unscented ointment (e.g. Aquaphor)

  • Fresh paper towels

If you went home in Saniderm/Tegaderm (clear bandage):

Skip to step 3 if you went home in a traditional bandage.

  1. Keep the bandage on for 3-5 days. If it starts to leak or lift significantly, remove it early.

  2. When it’s time to remove the clear bandage, I recommend doing it in the shower. Run hot water on top of the bandage to loosen the adhesive, then slowly peel it from the top. Be sure to grab the part closest to the skin as you’re peeling to minimize discomfort.

  3. With clean hands, gently soap up the tattoo with unscented soap. Only use your hands, do not use a washcloth. The tattoo will feel slimy – make sure to get the tattoo as clean as possible. Repeat the process of lathering until it starts to feel like normal skin.

  4. After washing, pat your tattoo dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub it or create any friction.

  5. Allow the tattoo to air dry for another 10-15 minutes.

  6. With clean hands, apply a very thin layer of unscented ointment to the tattoo. It should be just enough to lightly moisturize – you do not want your tattoo to be wet.

  7. Repeat steps 3-6 twice a day until the skin of the tattoo starts to feel like normal skin again. This will typically be 3-5 weeks.

While your tattoo is healing:

  • Avoid wearing tight fitting or rough clothing.

  • Avoid submerging your tattoo in water (bath, sauna, pool, river, etc.) for at least 3 weeks

  • Do take showers

  • Avoid picking or scratching at your tattoo

  • Avoid exposing your tattoo to sunlight for 2 weeks

  • If you think your tattoo has become infected, contact a doctor immediately
